Gates complete!

Despite a cold, foggy and damp morning we not only managed to keep warm but also completed the little gate.  Both gates look amazing and we will always be indebted to David R for so kindly giving up his Saturday mornings to make them and instruct us at the same time.

Other activities included brush cutting, cutting off Old Man's Beard and digging it out and cutting off the lower branches of Ash, Oak and Cherry.

David Rees demonstrating the fascinating art of splitting lengths of ash in readiness for making a rustic gate. Several of those watching were encouraged to have a go with great success. Several of the ash trees in Weaveley Furze were too close together so it was an ideal opportunity to thin them and use the wood for the gate.

Insects at the Furze

My objective had been to photograph birds at the Furze, but there is just too much cover at this time of year. I could hear several clearly, but see nothing. After an hour or two of frustration, I changed lenses and switched to photographing insects, which were much more obliging.

Seven-spot Ladybird

Damselfly

Meadow Brown

Ringlet

Essex Skipper (notice the black underside of the antennal tip)

I also saw Brimestone and Marbled  White, but didn't get photos of these. Despite the long dry period, the recent rain bought forth one mushroom:
Mushroom growing on woodpile. Dark gills, free from stipe.
